Getting a Free Turkey in D.C. on Tuesday

Two big events to give every family a Thanksgiving meal

On Tuesday, there is more than one way to get a free turkey for Thanksgiving.

D.C. Council Member Marion Barry is giving away 2,000 turkeys. The annual Ward 8 Turkey Giveaway is happening at Union Temple Baptist Church, 1225 W Street, SE from 9am – 5pm.

The giveaway will happen with no strings attached. The Washington Post reported Barry will not require people to attend community or PTA meetings as previously reported.

Last year, there was a turkey-distribution mess that left some people without turkey after a billing dispute.

Also on Tuesday, the Washington Redskins are giving away thousands of free birds at FedEx Field.  From 3 - 5 p.m., owner Dan Snyder, together with his team, will be handing out turkeys and other Thanksgiving food.

The Redskins say they have over 45,500 pounds of turkey to give, as well as over 100,000 pounds of other packaged food.  In addition, kids will get a chance to meet Santa, who'll be on hand to collect Christmas wish lists.

The goal is to provide families in need from around the region with a meal for Thursday's holiday.
