Gaithersburg Considers Selling Naming Rights to Facilities, Events

Gaithersburg, Md., like many cities, is facing a big budget crunch because of the recession, but it's considering something different to offset its deficit, reports Patch.com.

The city is considering selling naming rights to some facilities and giving some events corporate sponsors to raise money.

City leaders have made clear that they will not do business with tobacco, alcohol or firearms sellers, and they'll also avoid any offensive names.

In response to critics who feel events could lose their meaning with new names, Recreation Director Michele Potter told Patch.com that will never happen.

"We would never tarnish anything with a name that would affect the tradition or historical significance," she told Patch.
