Va. DMVs Back in Business; Open Late, Sunday, Labor Day

Office hours will be extended to accommodate thousands of people affected by a state computer crash

Virginians can finally get their driver’s licenses renewed again.

A computer glitch that affected as many as 45,000 drivers has been fixed.

To make up for lost time, all DMV offices will close at 6 p.m. instead of 5 p.m. on Thursday and Friday.  On Saturday, some offices will close at 6 p.m. instead of noon. And on Sunday and Labor Day, select customer service centers will open to help process the backlog, Virginia Gov. Bob McDonnell announced Thursday.

The following customer service centers will be open until 6 p.m. Saturday, from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday and from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. Monday:

  • Abingdon
  • Alexandria
  • Charlottesville
  • Chesapeake
  • Chesterfield
  • Fair Oaks (10:30 to 6:30)
  • Hampton
  • Harrisonburg
  • Leesburg
  • Lynchburg
  • Richmond-Broad Street
  • Roanoke
  • Virginia Beach- Buckner
  • Woodbridge    

The extended weekend hours will be in effect again Sept. 11 and 12.

The DMV will also add 20 days to most driver's licenses and identification cards that expired during the computer outage.

Last week's computer crash occurred at one of the Virginia Information Technologies Agency's sites and affected 26 agencies.
