It's back-to-back wins for Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology.

The Alexandria, Va., school was named the top U.S. high school for the second year in a row by U.S. News and World Report.  The school beat out more than 21,000 other schools for top honors.

The publication said the following about Thomas Jefferson:

"Known as 'TJ' to its students and faculty, Thomas Jefferson is a magnet high school that draws its students from among the best that suburban Washington, D.C., has to offer. The competitive academic environment at the school both challenges and rewards its student body. The students 'feed off of each other and create a kind of synergy for thinking,' says Thomas Jefferson Principal Evan Glazer.  TJ students are also able to take advantage of such high-tech course offerings as DNA Science II and Advanced Optics with Research Applications."

Other local schools that also made the list:

No. 44:  Walt Whitman High School, Bethesda, Md.
No. 54:  Thomas Wootton High School, Rockville, Md.
No. 55:  McLean High School, McLean, Va.
No. 57:  Winston Churchill High School, Potomac, Md.
No. 76:  Langley High School, McLean, Va.
No. 90:  Woodson High School, Fairfax, Va.

Students from Walt Whitman High grace the cover of the new issue, which hits newsstands Monday.

The publication said D.C. Public Schools was not included in the rankings because the school system "did not have sufficient information for their high schools to participate fully in the analysis, which involves a three-step process that examines how well a school serves its entire student body (average students, disadvantaged students, and collegebound students)."
