Hottest June on Record
The speculation is over, it's official. Even with a somewhat chilled final day of the month, June 2010 finished as the warmest on record for both D.C. and Dulles. Our recent streak of hot weather ended up as one of the longest heat waves for this early in the season and contributed to a record-tying number of June days at or above 90 -- 7 of which finished above 95 and one at 100. Mikhail Semenko's employer knew he liked to frequent embassy functions and didn't want to work at his small travel agency forever, but he was stunned when the somewhat awkward Russian immigrant was accused of being a spy. People who lived near Michael Zottoli and Patricia Mills at an Arlington high-rise apartment building about a mile from the Pentagon likewise were surprised when the pair were charged with being foreign agents. DC Chief Denies Cover-up
D.C. Police Chief Cathy Lanier is denying rumors that she covered up domestic dispute calls to the home of Mayor Adrian Fenty. Lanier's remarks came just days after Fenty publicly denied the rumors for the first time. Speaking on WTOP's Ask The Chief program on Thursday, Lanier said she had been hearing the rumors for years. "Actually, those rumors surfaced - I believe - as soon as he began running for mayor, and they've been around ever since," Lanier said. (WTOP)

Bear Struck by Truck
An 18-month-old black bear strayed too far from its mother June 30 and was struck by a flatbed trailer near Aldie. The 90-pound bear suffered severe injuries, forcing Loudoun County sheriff’s deputies to euthanize the animal to put it out of its misery, Kraig Troxell, a spokesman for the sheriff’s office, said July 1.The bear was hit by the truck on Gum Spring Road and Tall Cedars Parkway, an intersection near U.S. 50.
