D.C. residents who use wheelchairs are finally getting some respect.
As part of a $1.2 million pilot program using city and federal funds, Royal Cab and Yellow Cab in the District will have four Toyota Sienna minivans with special back door ramps ready to roll next month.
All 20 of their wheelchair-accessible minivans will be on the streets come January.
Currently, those need a special cab have to call a taxi company from the suburbs to get around.
Under the new program, passengers will only have to call one number and the closest available cab will pick them up.
Wheelchair taxis are currently available in Arlington and Alexandria. They also are available in Montgomery and Prince George's counties.
