D.C. Council on Tuesday made "Taxation Without Representation" Street one step closer to reality.

The council passed the first reading of the bill Tuesday, according to Council Member Kwame Brown.  The bill would rename a portion of South Capitol Street adjacent to Nationals Park between N Street and Potomac Avenue as Taxation Without Representation Street.  (Click here to read the bill.)

There was opposition to the renaming from developers, especially those who are building apartment complexes on the street.

"Thousands of fans attending over 80 games at the Nationals Ballpark will be reminded of the District's lack of representation in Congress," Brown said on his Web site. "Just as importantly, baseball fans across the nation watching ESPN will learn about (the) District's plight. This bill will literally put us on the road to full representation."

Brown said that part of South Capitol Street was chosen because of the stadium and because the road is a direct route to the Capitol itself.

A final reading of the bill is needed before the legislation can become law.  There was no immediate word on when that would happen.
