Facing a potential $7 billion loss this fiscal year, postal officials are considering closing nearly 1,000 post offices across the country, including 13 in the D.C. metro area.

The United States Postal Service has seen steep declines in usage in recent years, as former customers ditch snail mail for email, and businesses opt for online customer contact and billpay.

Four of the branches that may end up on the chopping block are in Maryland: the Derwood branch in Rockville, the Capital Heights branch in Bethesda, the Landover Hills office in Hyattsville, and the Silver Spring Center in Silver Spring.

Nine D.C. post offices are also being considered: Columbia Heights, Fort Davis, Ledroit Park, Naval Research Laboratory, Navy Annex, Northewast, Petworth, Randle, and Woodridge.

No post office branches in Northern Virginia are on the list.

No final decisions have been made.

No closures are expected before October.
