BALTIMORE -- Former Maryland Governor and Baltimore Mayor William Donald Schaefer said he was "amazed by the turnout" at the dedication of a statue in his honor.

Hundreds of people, including a who's who of Maryland politics, gathered at Baltimore's Inner Harbor for the unveiling of the bronze statue. It depicts Schaefer as he looked midway through his 16-year run as Baltimore mayor.

The crowd serenaded Schaefer with "Happy Birthday." He turned 88 Monday.

Schaefer was not scheduled to speak but stood with the help of an aide for some unscripted remarks at the end of the ceremony. He said Baltimore is one of the nation's great cities, and there's no place like the Inner Harbor anywhere.

He says he was moved by the tributes in what he calls the "twilight" of his life.
