It's PG Only for Redskins' Turkey Giveaway

Harvest Feast will deliver 3,000 turkeys

The Redskins have had their offensive struggles on the field this season, but they're scoring plenty of points in Prince George's County.

The team will be giving away free turkeys and side dishes during its annual Thanksgiving food giveaway Tuesday, Nov. 24 at FedEx Field. But the event, which started in 2003, is not open to just anyone.

Unlike in past years, the 'Skins have narrowed the giveaway so that only Prince George's County residents who have been deemed by the county's Department of Social Services will get the free meals.

Harvest Feast, as the giveaway is called, is expected to distribute 3,000 turkeys and more than 100,000 pounds of other food, said Betti-Jo Corriveau, the Redskins' vice president of community and charitable programs, in an e-mail to the Washington Post.

More than 300 corporate volunteers from FedEx, Harris Teeter, Ryan Homes, and Wachovia will join the Redskins to provide families with a whole turkey from Harris Teeter and packaged and fresh food from Operation Blessing, according to a team statement.

All children in attendance will also receive a special children’s gift bag which includes a Redskins Read activity book, toys and treats.

A Prince George's Co. spokeswoman would not tell the Post what the income eligibility requirements are, but said about 1,600 people have been qualified so far.

To apply, Maryland residents should contact the Prince George’s County Department of Social Services at (301) 909-7153.
