QUANTICO, Va. -- The Marine Corps Base at Quantico is at "threat condition alpha" after shootings in Fort Hood, Texas, that left 12 people dead and 31 wounded, a spokeswoman said.

First Lt. Joy Crabaugh, Quantico's media officer, said the base is monitoring the situation at Fort Hood and "pertinent" lines of communication were in place.

The base is implementing appropriate measures to ensure the safety of the base and its Marine and civilian residents and employees, Crabaugh said.
