D.C. Police Officer Injured in Northwest Shooting

Suspect arrested

A D.C. police officer suffered a graze wound in Northwest Tuesday afternoon.

The officer was responding to a report of a man with a gun in the 200 block of Emerson Street NW near New Hampshire Avenue, NBC Washington's Jackie Bensen reported. When the officer arrived, a man opened fire in what D.C. Police Chief Cathy Lanier called a brazen and horrific incident

A van carrying people with special needs was caught in the crossfire, Bensen said. The rear window was shattered, but no one inside the van was hit.

Though only one minor injury was reported, neighbors told Bensen that they heard a hail of gunfire.

The officer apparently was cut by a piece of broken glass, police said. He was taken to an area hospital.

Police arrested a suspect and recovered a gun from the scene.
