Overturned Trash Truck Blocks I-66 Lanes

An overturned trash truck made a mess of the morning commute on Interstate 66.

The truck tipped over, spilling garbage on the road.  The crash blocked all westbound lanes of Interstate 66 near the Beltway for hours.  The ramp to southbound I-495 was also closed.

Virginia State Police said two people were trapped in the truck when officials arrived at the scene at about 5 a.m. Wednesday.

The driver, Oscar R. Albarracin, 34, of New York, suffered non-life threatening injuries and was transported to Fairfax Inova Hospital for treatment.

Albarracin’s male passenger was not injured in the crash. Both men were wearing seat belts.

Albarracin was charged with reckless driving. Speed was a factor in the cause of the crash, according to police.

By 8:13 a.m., the dump truck had been uprighted. As of 9 a.m., two westbound lanes of I-66 were open to through traffic. Clean up of the trash is also under way.
