Virginia Governor Tim Kaine is set to become the next chairman of the Democratic National Committee. Meanwhile, a former chair of the D.N.C. has launched his campaign to succeed Kaine as governor.

Terry McAuliffe kicked off a weeklong,16-stop tour of Virginia early this morning in Norfolk. He's focusing his campaign on the economy, stressing his business credentials and pledging a pragmatic, nonpartisan approach.

McAuliffe is a former adviser to President Bill Clinton and Sen. Hillary Clinton and a prolific Democratic fundraiser. He's been hinting at a run for governor for months and his formal announcement sets up a three-way fight for the Democratic nomination with former state Delegate Brian Moran and state Sen. Creigh Deeds.

On the Republican side, Attorney General Bob McDonnell is running uncontested.
