A double shooting in Adams Morgan Wednesday night has left one man dead and another hospitalized.

A double shooting in Adams Morgan Wednesday night left one man dead and another hospitalized.

It happened shortly after 8 p.m. on a community playground in the 2100 block of Champlain Street, police said. Derrell Goins, 21, was shot several times and died at a local hospital. Another man was shot in the leg. That person ran to the intersection of Kalorama and 17th Street for help, police said.

About an hour later, shots were fired nearby at 14th and Fairmont streets. Police are trying to determine if there is a connection between the two shootings. In the second incident, police found shell casings but no victims.

The initial shooting happened within earshot of the busy 18th Street nightlife area of Adams Morgan and near the Marie Reed Community Learning Center.

"This is obviously one of our most vibrant areas," Mayor Adrian Fenty said. "It couldn't be much closer to the heart of Adams Morgan. It’s near one of our schools and it's in the middle of a burgeoning residential community."

Police are investigating what led to the shooting. So far, they have no motive but are looking for a dark-colored car seen in the area, police said.

Goins, a 2005 Wilson High School graduate, worked at the Washington Hilton Sport and Health Club and the Sport and Health Club at Tenleytown. He also was familiar to business people in Adams Morgan. He received an ANC scholarship to art school.
