The death of a man found in his Damascus, Md., apartment is being investigated as a homicide, the Montgomery County Police Department said.

Officers went to the Damascus Gardens complex in the 9800 block of Bethesda Church Road just after 6 p.m. Monday after they got a call to check on one of the residents. Billy Joe Ray, 65, was already dead when officers arrived, authorities said. He had suffered upper body trauma, police said. It was not clear how long he had been dead.

Homicide detectives were at the scene Monday night with a mobile crime scene investigation unit. Officers also knocked on neighbors' doors to ask questions.

Investigators are waiting on an autopsy report from the Baltimore Medical Examiner's Office to determine exactly how the man died, police said.

Anyone with information about Ray or the circumstances of his death should call police at 240-773-5070 or 301-279-8000 or Crime Solvers at 866-411-TIPS/8477.
