IMF PROTESTS AND PARKING RESTRICTIONS

The IMF/World Bank Spring Conference will cause closures and parking restrictions in downtown D.C. this weekend. The Global Justice Action group is planning some marches Saturday starting at 8 a.m., as well as what they're billing as an "economic summit" at noon at St. Stephen and the Incarnation Episcopal Church at 16th and New Streets, NW. The group's calendar of events also lists that they'll be playing baseball and soccer in the street near Washington Circle Saturday night.  On Sunday, a rally is set for 1 p.m. in Dupont Circle. The accompanying march will end in front of the World Bank.

VIRGINIA TECH TUITION GOING UP
Virginia Tech is increasing tuition and mandatory fees for in-state undergraduates by 5 percent.  The Board of Visitors Executive Committee approved the increase Thursday. Virginia undergraduates will pay $8,605, an increase of $407. If they live on campus, costs will rise 5.5 percent to $14,429.  Dwight Shelton, chief financial officer, said Virginia Tech's base budget has been reduced by more than $42 million because of reduced state support the last three years, so students have to bear more of the cost.  Out-of-state undergraduates living off campus will pay an average of $21,878, a 5.1 percent increase. Those living on campus will pay $27,702, a 5.3 percent increase.

BLACK BEAR NO LONGER ON THE LOOSE
A young black bear that caused a sensation eight months ago after making a rare appearance on Maryland's Eastern Shore was captured Wednesday after making a return trip to the area, officials said yesterday.  The bear was caught in the back yard of a residence just outside downtown Centreville when he crawled into a trap baited with birdseed, according to Paul Peditto, director of the Maryland Department of Natural Resources' Wildlife and Heritage Service. The bear, a male, was tranquilized, tagged and transported to a new home in Washington County.  The young bear's appearance last fall caused a stir because a black bear had not been seen on the Eastern Shore since Colonial times, Peditto said.  The bear first turned up in September in the Fairlee area of Kent County. A few days later, he was spotted farther south in Queen Anne's County, wandering in the parking lot of the Acme store in downtown Centreville, Peditto said. Locals were so thrilled by the rare sighting that they crowded to snap pictures of him.

FAKE JEANS CONFISCATED
Designer jean owners can breathe a sigh of relief.  Customs officials seized more than 20,000 pairs of counterfeit designer jeans at the Port of Hampton Roads Friday.  U.S. Customs and Border Protection said the jeans were valued at more than $403,000.  Bill Blass, Rocawear and South Pole were among the brand labels on the jeans, which were shipped from China.  (What?  No "True Religion" or "Seven for all Mankind?")  Customs spokesman Tim Sushil said the jeans probably will be destroyed, although they could be donated with permission from trademark owners.
