A deer hunter faces manslaughter and other charges in connection with the fatal shooting of a Ferrum College student and the wounding of another.
Three students were collecting frogs for a biology class at about 4 p.m. Tuesday when two were shot along a trail about a mile west of campus, according to a college representative.
Authorities say 23-year-old Jessica Goode died after being shot in the chest. Regis Boudinot, 20, who attended Langley High School, was shot in the hand, according to Roanoke.com. The other student wasn't injured.
A relative posted an update on Boudinot's condition on his Facebook page:
"Regis is out of surgery. There has been extensive damage done to his right hand, and part of at least one finger is missing. The surgeon tried to fill in the missing tissue. All nerves and tendons/etc. seem to be intact, but will require a lot of therapy to heal."
Sgt. Karl Martin the Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries said Jason David Cloutier, 31, of Ferrum, Va., was charged with manslaughter, reckless handling of a firearm and trespassing.
A prayer service was scheduled Wednesday at the college.
