WASHINGTON -- Street closures due to the shooting at the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum are making a mess of traffic in the D.C. area.

Police closed the 14th Street Bridges and surrounding streets for the investigation. The 14th Street Bridges have reopened, according to D.C. Department of Transportation Director Gabe Klein, and all major arterials are open.

The shooting and closures could make a mess of rush hour traffic. Motorists should avoid the area.

Fourteenth Street between Constitution Avenue and D Street SW remained closed while police investigated.

Northbound 14th Street Bridge traffic from Virginia into D.C. is being diverted to the Southeast/Southwest Freeway.

Outbound motorists can take Constitution to the Theodore Roosevelt and Memorial bridges or the outbound 14th Street Bridge from the Southeast/Southwest Freeway.

The Ninth Street, Third Street and 12th tunnels are open.
