WASHINGTON -- Former District Mayor Marion Barry was released from Howard University Hospital Friday after successfully undergoing a kidney transplant a week earlier.
The 72-year-old D.C. Council member received a kidney from longtime friend Kim Dickens, a 47-year-old D.C. native.
An upbeat Barry said he feels better than he did before the surgery.
A spokeswoman for Barry said his kidney problems are the result of diabetes and hypertension.
The kidney transplant came as prosecutors were seeking to have Barry jailed for failing to file his 2007 federal and local tax returns. A hearing is set for April 2.
