Girl Drowns at D.C. Rec Center

A six-year-old girl drowned at a northeast Washington recreation center Wednesday afternoon. She has been identified as Yiana-Michelle Ballard of Northeast D.C.

Ballard was pulled from the deep end of an indoor pool at Turkey Thicket Recreation Center.

Three lifeguards were on duty at the time. They and others at the scene tried to perform CPR, and paramedics also tried to revive the girl, said D.C. Fire and EMS Department spokesperson Pete Piringer. The girl's family was present as well.

Within five minutes, Ballard was taken to a hospital, where she was pronounced dead, Piringer said.

D.C. police are investigating the circumstances of the incident.
