A Forest Heights, Md., woman's dog was killed while Prince George's County sheriff's deputies served an eviction notice.
Donya Williams, a mother of four, was behind on her rent, authorities said. Deputies knocked on her door Friday, announced their presence and entered.
One of the deputies said he was cornered by a Rottweiler and shot at it when it lunged at him.
Williams got so upset she had to be hospitalized for a couple of days. Her sister said the dog, Kato, was just protecting his family.
Before the deputies entered, the landlord had told the deputies about the dog and that it was kept in a crate in the basement, and the deputies requested Animal Control to take custody of the dog.
Apparently they entered before Animal Control to conduct a security sweep, and there was no sign that the dog was loose in the house. Critics are saying Kato could still be alive if the deputies had waited for Animal Control.
The deputy who shot the dog was placed on administrative duties.
