VIENNA, Va. -- Two families are suing the town of Vienna over a 2007 Fourth of July fireworks show at which some spectators were seriously injured.

According to the lawsuits, Michael Ku and his son suffered severe burns, perforated eardrums and puncture wounds, while Kathryn Hollis and her two sons suffered disfiguring burns and traumatic brain injuries. The injuries were the result of errant fireworks fired into the crowd. Michale Ku's son's hearing loss could be permanent.

Fairfax County fire marshals are also named in the suits, along with the show operator and the company alleged to have imported the fireworks.

The fire marshals had warned Vienna officials for several years that the annual fireworks display in the center of town was a bad idea, but the displays continued.

The town said it has no liability for the incident, and the fire department declined to comment on the suit.

Last year, Vienna opted for a laser lights show instead, but the town is planning a fireworks display again this year, but in a new location.
