Man used T-shirt to kill self, police say

Updated 7:16 AM EDT, Mon, Aug 24, 2009

A suspected drunken driver hanged himself in a cell at the town's police station early Sunday, Bladensburg police said.

Police say 28-year-old Arturo Mendez Morales of Hyattsville was taken into custody after officers saw him stumbling in the street toward oncoming traffic. His sport-utility vehicle had crashed into a telephone pole.

Morales was arrested and taken to the police station for processing. During a check of his cell, an officer found that Morales had tied his T-shirt around his neck and hanged himself from the cell door. Efforts to revive him were unsuccessful, and he was pronounced dead at Prince George's Hospital Center.

Prince George's County police are investigating the death.
