WASHINGTON -- D.C. has shut down 100 used car shops that either operated improperly or were fronts for chop shops, government officials said.

"The only used car lots remaining in Washington, D.C., will be used car lots that are no longer a blight in the community," Mayor Adrian Fenty said.

Fenty and other city officials announced the results of Operation Pit Bull -- a crackdown on illegal or unsafe shops -- and promised more enforcement by spring.

All 200 used car dealers in the city have been reviewed for proper licenses and operations. One hundred of the dealers are now out of business or inactive. The city suspended 27 licenses. More than 400 vehicles have been towed.

Next, the city could target towing companies and other consumer businesses that can prey on the public, Attorney General Peter Nickles said.
