Coming Soon: Barack Hussein Obama Park?

Graham introduces resolution

First, there was a Prince George's County elementary school. Now, get ready for the possible renaming of a D.C. park to honor President Barack Obama.

Ward 1 Councilman Jim Graham introduced a resolution Tuesday to rename Girard Park in Columbia Heights "Barack Hussein Obama Park," according to the Washington Post.

Barack Obama Elementary School, which is expected to be completed later this year in Upper Marlboro, will be the first school in the Washington region to be named after the president, but not the first in the nation. A Long Island school was renamed shortly after Obama was elected in November.

Note the lack of a "Hussein" in the school name. Graham told the Post the middle name is key for the park in order to recognize Columbia Heights' diversity.

But just when you thought all was warm and fuzzy, the Post gives an update that says it might take a change in D.C. law in order for this to happen:

According to the D.C. Code, "No public space in the District shall be named in honor of any living person, or in honor of any person who has been deceased less than 2 years, unless the deceased person was a President or Vice President of the United States, a United States Senator or Representative, a Mayor of the District of Columbia, or a member of the Council of the District of Columbia."
