American University Student Newspapers Vandalized Over Published “Rape Apology”

The Washington City Paper reported that someone has taken copies of American University’s student paper, "The Eagle," from on-campus newsstands and replaced them with signs reading: "NO ROOM FOR RAPE APOLOGISTS." The City Paper said this is in response to AU sophomore Alex Knepper’s column "Dealing With AU’s Anti-Sex Brigade," which appeared in yesterday’s Eagle.

In the column, Knepper derides "feminists" and claims "...any woman who heads to [a fraternity] party as an anonymous onlooker, drinks five cups of the jungle juice, and walks back to a boy’s room with him is indicating that she wants sex, OK?"

American student K. Travis Ballie sent an e-mail to the City Paper saying the vandalist is a student but is not affiliated with any particular organization. Ballie, who the City Paper identified as a "campus feminist and LGBT activist," also wrote that the Eagle disrespects rape survivors.

In an interview with the City Paper, Eagle editor-in-chief Jen Calantone said she and her staff have refilled Eagle newsstands and removed the "rape apologist" signs. Calantone said the paper encourages discussion and accepts criticism but vandalism is unwanted.
