Above and Beyond the Call of Duty

D.C. firefighters deliver Thanksgiving dinner

District firefighters are used to helping people. But this Thanksgiving, they are going above and beyond the call of duty.

While running calls during the year, the firefighters ran across families they figured would not be able to afford a Thanksgiving dinner on their own. So the firefighters collected items to make a complete holiday meal for those people. On Monday, they delivered those baskets to several needy families.

"You have everything from the turkey, to all the sides, all the trimmings. That way the family is in need of nothing come Thanksgiving Day," said Lt. Ed Kauffman, a District firefighter involved in the food collection. "We realize how lucky we are and it's a little way for us to give back.”

This is the fourth year in a row the firefighters have delivered Thanksgiving baskets.
