6 Days, 6 Murders In Prince George's County

Police department steps up patrols in Oxon Hill area

Over the last two years, Prince George’s County has seen a decrease in homicides.  But if the first week of 2011 is any indication, that may soon change.

Six people have been murdered in the county since January 1.  The most recent happened Wednesday night in Oxon Hill, Md.  A man was found suffering from gunshot wounds in the hallway of an apartment building on Southview Drive.

This follows five other homicides in that same general area.  In two of the cases, the victims were duct taped.  Police believe those killings are connected.  Police also believe the majority of the shootings have some sort of drug connection.

The police department said it’s going to focus much of its resources now in the Oxon Hill area. That’s District 4, the county’s largest district.

“From the very top, to the patrol officer on the beat, everyone is tied into what’s going on and what the effort is,” Acting Police Chief Mark Magaw said.  “Working together is the only way that we can attack this issue and get in front of it.”
