What's Your Workout: Trampolines

Rebounderz is located in Sterling, Va.

It was a tough morning. I was the victim of a major Metro delay, leaving me stranded at Metro Center for nearly an hour. I was just starting to develop a killer cough that would leave me sick for the next two weeks.

The last thing I wanted to do was jump around on a trampoline.

But alas, I had once again roped myself into covering another wacky workout. This one had me trekking out to Sterling, Va. (you know I don’t like to go outside the Beltway), to Rebounderz, a self-proclaimed trampoline arena. Here I would be doing a trampoline aerobic workout with the trainers from Face Your Fitness.

It sounded brilliant when I was booking it, but weeks later I was in no mood to bounce around the room (Phish reference here?) with a bunch of strangers.

We got there late because of the aforementioned Metro delay and class had already started. I checked the place out. It’s literally an arena of springy trampolines. So even if you took a spill, there wasn’t much of a risk of breaking any bones.

I jumped into the class (literally) and next thing I know I was in a bootcamp-style workout, but it was 10 times harder. I mean, imagine doing push ups, burpees and lunges -- all on a trampoline. That means it’s an unstable surface so you literally need to engage your core so you don’t fall on your behind.

After 15 minutes, I was sweating, huffing and puffing. Good thing there were only 20 minutes left in class by the time I got there!

But here’s the thing: I went in with this grumpy-I-don’t-want-to-do-this attitude and I left with a big smile on my face. That’s because jumping on a trampoline is fun! Even doing dreaded burpees on a trampoline is kind of fun.

I left the trampoline arena wishing I had gotten there on time so I could have gotten that awesome workout. I mean, what are the odds that my non-driving, non-bike-riding-self will make it back to Sterling?
