Salmonella Outbreak Sickens Hundreds

2 genetic fingerprint patterns of salmonella strains grouped into single strain

At least 200 people in 21 states and Washington, D.C., are sick with two rare strains of salmonella.

The source of the outbreak is believed to be from a frozen yellowfin tuna product by Moon Marine USA Corp. Moon Marine recalled 58,828 pounds of the frozen fish earlier this month.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports tainted tuna scraped from the backbone of the fish has been linked not only to the salomella Barilly strain, but also to salmonella Nchanga infections.

Although it was not for individual sale, it may have been used to make sushi, sashimi, ceviche and other similar dishes.

No deaths have been reported but 28 people have been hospitalized.
