WASHINGTON -- D.C. Police Chief Cathy Lanier kicked off a summer fitness challenge for police officers.

Teams of four will compete to lose the most weight over the next eight weeks.

Officers will wear pedometers to see which team does the most walking.

The department hopes the voluntary contest will help promote physical activity.
