Online Appliance Retailers Fined

FTC charges companies for failing to post EnergyGuide information

Two online appliance retailers are being fined hundreds of thousands of dollars for failing to post EnergyGuide information about their products on their websites.

Universal Appliances, Kitchens, and Baths, Inc. has agreed to pay a $100,000 penalty to settle Federal Trade Commission charges that it allegedly violated the Appliance Labeling Rule.

The FTC is seeking $540,000 in fines from Universal Computers and Electronics, Inc. for similar violations.

The Appliance Labeling Rule helps consumers make informed buying decisions based on energy use information for products such as refrigerators, freezers, dishwashers, air conditioners, water heaters and washing machines.

EnergyGuide information estimates the annual cost to operate an appliance.

The FTC has charged five companies in all since November 2010 for allegedly violating the Appliance Labeling Rule.
