The classes on the chopping block range from human biology to the psychology of shyness.

The chancellor of City College of San Francisco has come up with an unusual way to keep the cash-strapped school from having to cancel hundreds of courses come fall.

Don Griffin is encouraging academic philanthropists to donate $6,000 to the endangered class of their choice. In exchange, the class will be named in the contributor's honor.

"If you want to pay for one class at City College, it's $6,000," Griffin told The Chronicle. "And if you designate it for that class, we'll make sure the class is reinstated, and we'll put your name on it."

The 800 or so courses facing the chopping block range from basics such financial accounting, human biology, elementary French to Advanced Insurance Billing and the Psychology of Shyness and Self-esteem.

Griffin says that canceling so many of its 9,800 classes means there won't be room to accommodate all the students who want to attend City College and that instructors will lose their jobs.
