With a looming revenue shortfall of an eerie $666 million, the District is repealing the August sales tax holiday.
The move will save the District from losing an estimated $640,000 in sales tax revenues, most of which comes from back-to-school shoppers hoping for some added savings.
D.C. is reminding businesses that usually participate in the holiday to reprogram cash registers so the tax remains, and to not advertise the holiday to customers.
The August sales tax holiday usually provided a nine-day exemption from the 5.75 percent sales tax on purchases of clothing, accessories, shoes and school supplies for $100 or less.
