Driver Killed by Falling Tree in Great Falls

Massive tree fell on car

A man died when a huge tree fell on his car Tuesday evening.

The victim was driving along Georgetown Pike in Great Falls, Va., when the tree fell shortly after 6:30 p.m. Fairfax County police have identified him as 64-year-old Albert Carl Roeth III.

Fire crews were able to remove his body from the car, police said, after hours of work.

Georgetown Pike is closed between Walker Road and Stephanie Circle.

Authorities first reported that the victim was a woman, but Fairfax County Fire confirmed it was a man. He was the only person in the car.

Arborists determined the tree fell because it was completely decayed at the roots, News4's Erika Gonzalez reported. Another tree in the area also was found to be decayed at the roots and will be removed.
