Bristol Palin said she's glad she didn't marry the father of her five-month-old son despite the heartbreaking split that left the unwed teen mom devastated.

"I'm thankful we didn't get married because if it wasn't going to work now, it wasn't going to work in five years," she told People magazine.

The 18-year-old daughter of Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin - who graces the cover of the most recent People magazine in her cap and gown while holding her infant son - had a very public breakup with Levi Johnston, 19, and the two continue to grapple with custody and child support issues.

Now, Bristol, who had to skip her prom and senior portrait, said her life is much more isolated.

"I have other things to worry about," she said.

The young mother usually gets up twice a night to tend to Tripp, who sleeps in a second-hand crib in her room. Bristol was often forced to hammer out homework assignments for school while he infant son wailed in the background, she told the magazine.

"If girls realized the consequences of sex, nobody would he having sex," she said. "Trust me.  Nobody."

Bristol breastfed Tripp for a month and had to pump milk before class then rush home to feed him. She worked two part-time jobs to help buy diapers and formula, according to the magazine.

"Girls need to imagine and picture their life with a screaming newborn baby and then think before they have sex," Bristol told People. "Think about the consequences."

She spent graduation night bottle-feeding her son rather than celebrating the accomplishment with friends.

Bristol said she wants to go to a two-year college where she can major in business and eventualy work in real estate. For now, she's become the face of an anti-teen pregnancy group.
