The city of Bridgeport doesn’t mess around when taxes aren’t paid and that could mean a man might lose his house over about $50.

Bridgeport is foreclosing on Jean Castro's single-family home because of $51.69 in unpaid taxes. Last week, a judge OK’d the foreclosure and the home will be sold in December.

The city sent Castro a notice that he owed back taxes and he forwarded it to his mortgage company, which pays his property taxes. The mortgage paid $3,000 in back taxes, leaving the small balance.

"The bank said it was going to take care of the back taxes and that's the last I knew of it," Castro told the Connecticut Post.

By the time he learned about the payment it was too late, because the foreclosure had started and the city had racked up more than $3,000 in legal costs and fees, the city's lawyer said.
