A sheriff’s department in West Virginia arrested an employee of the Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Martinsburg for allegedly dealing heroin – the second such arrest in three years.
Investigators found Michael Brown with $9,000 cash with which they suspect he was about to buy heroin to distribute in Martinsburg, according to the Berkeley County Sheriff’s Department. He was arrested after a traffic stop along Interstate 81.
The VA Medical Center in Martinsburg treats thousands of veterans, including those from Loudoun and Frederick counties. In December 2015, the News4 I-Team revealed another employee there pleaded guilty to dealing heroin and was allowed to keep his job, prompting a congressional committee to order VA leaders to appear and answer for it.
“In the private sector, I learned you can’t fire your way out of problems,” Veterans Affairs Deputy Secretary Sloan Gibson said in December 2015.
The agency won’t comment on Brown’s employment.
He hasn’t entered a plea in his case and is scheduled to appear in court in March.
