Robert Griffin III Leaves Game With Left Ankle Injury

The Redskins' greatest fear was realized Sunday when quarterback Robert Griffin III was forced to leave the team's home opener against the Jaguars after suffering a left ankle injury during the first quarter.

Rolling out of the pocket to his right, Griffin completed a pass to DeSean Jackson for 19 yards to Jacksonville's 20-yard line as he scrambled toward the sideline. A grounded Griffin was in noticeable pain and was ultimately carted off the field. Kirk Cousins replaced him and immediately threw a touchdown pass to Darrel Young to give Washington an early lead.

At the post-game press conference, head coach Jay Gruden said Griffin has a dislocated ankle. More tests are scheduled for tomorrow and no length of time was provided for recovery.

Gruden said he was sick about Griffin's injury, but said the Redskins can win any game with Kirk Cousins.

Griffin said he felt the ankle injury just before the throw to Jackson. "My ankle got caught on the ground," he said. "It was an unfortunate situation."

He hobbled to the post-game podium on crutches with a heavy wrap on his left ankle.

Griffin had praise for Cousins and the defense, but also was heartened to hear the fans as he was carted off the field.

"The city ... has embraced me and my family. It meant a lot to hear them cheering when I went off the field," he said.

Griffin will have more tests tomorrow, including an MRI.
