Glass Half Full: Sample Scores of Local Wines at the Vintage Virginia Wine Fest

Get ready to see your glass half full -- taste wines from 29 local Virginia homegrown wineries during the 34th annual Vintage Virginia Wine and Food Festival, coming up May 30-31.

Virginians have proudly shared their wine since the 17th century. Vintage Virginia offers an opportunity to taste wines from nearly half of the commonwealth's wineries, from some of the largest labels to the new up-and-comers.

You'll find them at the Bull Run Special Events Center (7700 Bull Run Drive) about an hour outside of D.C.

Good wine, food and music are the golden trifecta of a great wine-tasting experience. More than 20 D.C. food trucks are driving up to the fest, offering culinary options ranging from crab cakes to Cuban sandwiches. Big Tony & Trouble Funk, Love Canon, Bosley, and Blue Mule will perform at the event with a funky flare. In keeping with the local theme, all the musicians are from the DMV area.

General admission for one day is $30 in advance, or $35 at the gate. A two-day pass is also available ($35 in advance; $40 at the gate). The ticket also gets you a commemorative wine glass, and all-day samplings from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Designated drivers get a special discount ($15 in advance; $18 at the gate), and have access to free water and soda throughout the fest.

Kids ages 5 and below are free; kids ages 6-12 get in $7 in advance or $10 at the door. The festival also provides a Family Tent area, where kids can play the day away and watch Gravity Check, a fast-paced juggling act.

The festival also offers several VIP options, starting at $45. This year brings a new VIP option called the Top 5 Tasting. Under a shaded tent, customers can have a private tasting experience of the top five wines from each participating winery.

A "worry-free" shuttle service travels back and forth between the Vienna Metro station and the festival for $33. If you want to drive to the event, parking opens at 10 a.m. and closes at 8 p.m.
