Virginia Awaits Your Icy Ocean Dips for the 2014 Polar Plunge

It's that time of year. Despite the recent bitter cold, it's time we break out the bikinis and head towards the beach...for the 2014 Polar Plunge in Virginia Beach (and beyond).  We're sorry it's not warm yet.

Who knew that there would be volleyball in the dead of winter but apparently in Virginia Beach this is  nothing new, especially since the 2014 Winter Festival is under way this Feb. 7-8. Registration for the Plunge events and the inaugural beach volleyball tournament are open now--don't forget your costumes! There's a contest for that too. The Virginia Beach Plunge is Virginia's largest fundraiser for the Special Olympics that features you, you're friends and Special Olympic athletes taking the plunge into the icy cold ocean.

The Winter Fest has a few options to choose from for donating. The Plunge ($100), Pee Wee Plunge ($50), the 5K Run ($35) and the Cool School Challenge ($100).

If you're closer to Northern Virginia, then the comparable Tim's River shore Polar Plunge (1510 Cherry Hill Rd. Dumfries, VA) might be just your fit. Plungers will have to raise $100 to participate and you must be over the age of 18. You'll get some good swag for all your efforts including a long sleeve t-shirt, GoPro helmet cams and more. The more you raise the more stuff you get in return.

Start your own Plunge website via First Giving  to invite your friends where they can donate online. Tim's River shore Plunge takes place on Feb. 22 at 2:30 p.m. Registration and check-in is from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Costume contest begins at 1:45 p.m. Winners announced at 3:30 p.m.

The Virginia Beach Winter Festival is located about 200 miles from downtown D.C. and the Tim's River shore Polar Plunge is about 45 minutes from D.C.
