Prince George's County officials have approved the University of Maryland's proposal to sell beer at the school's football and basketball games.
The County Board of Commissioners on Wednesday approved a one-year-long pilot program in which beer will be sold at Byrd Stadium and the Xfinity Center. If the trial period goes well, the school could add wine to the menu.
Maryland President Wallace Loh endorsed the student-led proposal last month, saying the measure will help curb binge drinking prior to athletic events.
Loh says beer sales will bring in at least $500,000 annually that will be contributed to mental health counseling, responsible drinking programs and sexual assault awareness programs.
Maryland will be one of six schools among the 64 in the Power Five conferences to offer beer at athletic events.
