9:30 Club to Host U.S. Air Guitar Semifinals

Get ready to (fake) rock.

The U.S. Air Guitar Semifinals are headed to the 9:30 Club (815 V St. NW) July 19. But it's not just shredding air for fun; no, there is more at stake here. This is an air guitar battle royale.

Each semifinal competitor will perform two songs, one of their own choosing and the other a surprise. They shred to each song for one minute and are judged on their technical skills, stage presence and “airness” by a panel of independent judges chosen by U.S. Air Guitar.

The most important rule: All guitars must be invisible.

Air Guitar Nation" star Bjorn Turoque (aka Dan Crane) will host this tournament of air guitar titans. There will be special halftime performances by air guitar legends, including a duet between 2008 U.S. and World Air Guitar champion Hot Lixx Hulahan and current world champion Nordic Thunder.

Tickets are available online for $20.

Ultimately, the nation's (semi)best air guitarists will be propelled from D.C., Chicago, New York and San Francisco to advance to the U.S. Air Guitar Finals in Los Angeles in August.

Whoever wins that will represent the United States in the Air Guitar World Championships in Finland.
