POUND Transforms Drumming Into Exercise

A good workout can be a great stress reliever, and one routine kicks it up a notch by adding drumming.

On the hit NBC show “This Is Us,” the character Kate Pearson used a POUND class to get in touch with her feelings.

POUND incorporates Ripstix – lightly weighted drumsticks designed for exercise – to transform drumming into a workout.

Christian Brezler has instructed Pilates for years, and she also plays the drums, so when her husband introduced the idea of becoming a POUND instructor to her, it made perfect sense.

“I love that I can incorporate my love of playing the drums, along with fitness,” she said.

She leads classes in the basement of her Great Falls, Virginia, home.

“Not only is POUND cardio, but there's also a lot of moves where it's plyometrics, isometric poses and also Pilates,” she said.

“I'm actually on a new medication for my heart and I was taking it really easy, didn’t know how it was going to play out, but I enjoyed it. I'm glad I came,” Nolkis Roman said after her first class. “I tried it out, and my heart, I feel really good.”

Brezler’s 12-year-old daughter, Vivian, loves the class, too.

”It's a lot of fun, and I think a lot of people like it because it’s very upbeat and you get to move around and it's really fun,” she said.

Brezler trained to be a POUND instructor last year and gives a few classes every week in her home studio.

She said she loves teaching the class and it offers unexpected benefits.

“Ever since I started teaching POUND, I've actually gotten better at playing the drums, so it's a win-win,” she said.
