One Eight Distilling Opens Next Week in Northeast D.C.

D.C.’s newest liquor distillery opens in Northeast next week.

One Eight Distilling will have its grand opening Jan. 8 off redeveloping New York Avenue, just around the corner from Green Hat Gin.

The distillery will start with vodka and Rock Creek white whiskey and then will begin aging Rock Creek rye whiskey, Rock Creek bourbon whiskey and Ivy City gin.

The name refers to Article One, Section Eight of the Constitution, which allowed the establishment of a district to serve as the nation’s capital.

“We’re D.C. proud,” cofounder and CEO Sandy Wood said. “We wanted to be part of the city, and there’s definitely a renaissance in this neighborhood as well as the city as a whole.”

It’s the fourth distillery in Washington. Along with several beer breweries, they are remaking the city's booze market and adding new jobs and city opportunities.

One Eight will have Saturday tours and special events, Wood said.

“It's a nationwide trend,” Wood said. “There's a craft movement where people are interested in creating and participating in the things that they consume. So we're very much a part of that.”

One Eight has been setting up for more than a year.
