A new musical from Steve Martin and singer-songwriter Edie Brickell is scheduled to have an opening in Washington before a planned Broadway opening in 2016.

Producers of "Bright Star'' announced Tuesday that the musical will have a pre-Broadway engagement from Dec. 2 to Jan. 10 at the Kennedy Center. Martin does not appear in the musical.

"Bright Star'' is the story of a literary editor named Alice Murphy who meets a soldier home from World War II and together they discover a secret. The story is set in the South in the 1920s and 1940s.

The production is directed by Tony Award winner Walter Bobbie.

No details have been announced for the Broadway engagement. "Bright Star'' had its premiere and was developed at The Old Globe theater in San Diego.
