Capitol Pride Goers Mourn Victims of Orlando Shooting

An LGBT pride festival in Washington was a more somber occasion this year in the wake of a mass shooting at a gay nightclub in Florida.

People who attended Sunday's Capital Pride Festival expressed sadness and anger over the killings that left dozens of others wounded in Orlando, The Washington Post reports.

David Mariner, executive director of the DC Center for the LGBT Community, said the incident is a "powerful reminder that there's still a lot of hatred in the world."

Festival goers took part in a moment of silence to honor the victims before the playing of "The Star Spangled Banner."

James Dallas Dunn of Arlington said he and his boyfriend considered not attending the festival because of safety concerns but decided not to give into fear.

Omar Mateen opened fire at the Pulse nightclub in Orlando around 2 a.m. Sunday, exchanging shots with a police officer and taking club-goers hostage before being killed by a SWAT team, authorities said.

At least 49 people were killed and another 53 were wounded in what is now the deadliest mass shooting in U.S. history.
