Amish Help Restore Historic Catoctin Park Cabins

The National Park Service says Amish volunteers from Indiana are helping to restore some historic cabins in Catoctin Mountain Park near Thurmont.

They're working this month at Camp Misty Mount, a collection of 29 wood-and-stone cabins built by the Depression-era Works Progress Administration.

Volunteers will help strip designated cabins to their original components. They will then restore the buildings using historically accurate techniques and materials.

The volunteers from Nappanee, Ind., are participants in a program that enables them serve their country without joining the military.

The cabins have been used by groups ranging from the Salvation Army to the Marine Corps. Marines bunked there in the 1940s to provide wartime protection for the nearby presidential retreat that became Camp David.
