Stephanopoulos Named “GMA” Co-host

Former Clinton staffer plans to bring hard news focus to morning show

George Stephanopoulos has taken the "Good Morning America" co-host gig, and his first day on the job is Monday.

The network was planning to make a formal announcement Thursday night, according to the The Washington Post. Stephanopoulos will replace Diane Sawyer, while Chris Cuomo will remain with the network as anchor of "20/20." Cuomo had been considered for the job, co-hosting opposite Robin Roberts.

Sources told the Post Stephanopoulos will continue to host the Sunday talk show "This Week" for thhe time being.

Stephanopoulos has told network execs he wants to inject "GMA" with a harder-news focus. He rose to prominence as an aide to President Clinton.
